Duplex scanning

As the newest diagnostics method, duplex scanning has opened up wide horizons in diagnostics sphere thanks to 4D volume rendering, and within a short time made it one of the most important instruments in contemporary medicine, allowing diagnosing diseases that had been ignored previously.

Besides the doctors’ skills and professionalism, the type of the equipment used is also key to the success of the method. The newest duplex scanning equipment used at Slavmed Medical Center, is one of a few that make it possible to examine even the smallest changes in the vessels. Duplex scanning involves a color Doppler recording as well as a spectral Doppler analysis. One of the main advantages of this diagnostics method is its high sensitivity, non-invasiveness, and the ability to double-check the results. The method is indispensable for early detection of both neurological and vascular problems. This non-invasive method of vascular examination allows evaluating blood circulation values, vein and arterial vessels patency, the degree of stenosis, vascular wall, venous thrombosis, etc. This type of testing is absolutely safe and pain-free, as the equipment used does not imply ionizing, that is x-rays, therefore patients are exposed to radiation to no extent. The duration of testing is 15-30 minutes, with results available immediately after completion.

Indications for duplex scanning of “extracranial” vessels of the neck:

-acute cerebral circulation insufficiency,

– insults,

– headache,

– buzzing,

– dizziness,

– impairment of consciousness,

– unilateral  numbness of extremities,

– dysphasia,

-high blood cholesterol and triglyceride level,

– pulsating tumour in the area of neck,

–  atherosclerosis of lower extremities and coronary heart vessels,

– heart attack,

– diabetes,

– chronic nephatony,

– unexplainable long term pain in the area of neck,

-surgeries of vessels,

-as preventive measures.

The following are indications for duplex testing of upper and lower extremities:

-severe or chronic swellings of extremities,

-abnormal red and painful spots on the leg in the veins direction,

– lower leg muscle pain,

– visible varicose veins on leg,

– formations in various segments of the leg detected during palpation,

– pain in lower leg and hips when walking,

-for assessing the level of damage in vessels if diagnosed with diabetes,

– after vascular surgery or interventions on the vessels

The following are indications for vascular duplex ultrasound of the abdomen

 -increase and decrease in arterial blood pressure,

-male smokers over 55 years old,

– abnormal pain in the abdomen area,

– appearance of intermittent lameness,
